From cozy nights to outdoor adventures: Make the most of the winter season
Winter is a season to rest, reconnect, and reset. Stanford’s winter closure provides the perfect opportunity to recharge in mind, body, and spirit. However, with the holiday season come extra pressures – cooking, shopping, traveling, and often a change in routine – which can make it hard to truly relax. Whether you’re taking time off or managing a busy schedule, here are tips from BeWell to help you thrive this winter.
1. Prioritize rest and relaxation
Good health starts with rest. In our fast-paced lives, we often neglect quality sleep, which is essential for recharging our bodies and minds. Use this time off to catch up on sleep by establishing a bedtime routine that helps you wind down, such as reading or meditation. By getting enough sleep, you’re giving your body and mind the chance to recover from the demands of daily life.
Tip: Disconnect from screens at least an hour before bed. Instead, enjoy activities that promote relaxation, like a warm bath or light stretching.
2. Reconnect with nature
Even in the cold winter months, spending time outdoors can have numerous benefits, from reducing stress to boosting your immune system. A short walk, a hike, or even a few minutes on your patio can bring a sense of calm. Sunshine and fresh air help balance your mood and provide essential Vitamin D, especially when days are shorter.
Tip: Dress warmly and consider outdoor activities like winter hiking, birdwatching, or photographing seasonal landscapes. If the weather doesn’t permit outdoor adventures, bring nature indoors with houseplants or a cozy nook by a window with natural light.
3. Move your body
Physical activity is vital year-round, and winter is no exception. Regular movement, whether it’s gentle yoga, a brisk walk, or a dance workout, releases endorphins that improve mood and energy. Engaging in physical activity can also help beat seasonal sluggishness, making it easier to maintain a positive outlook.
Tip: Explore fun winter activities like ice skating, take a short walk to enjoy the crisp winter air, or if the weather does not allow for outdoor movement, consider some light exercise indoors.
4. Practice mindfulness and reflection
Winter is a natural time for reflection and mindfulness. A mindful approach can reduce stress and improve self-awareness, helping us gain perspective. Take a few moments to appreciate the quietness of the season, reflect on the past year, and set intentions for the new year. Simple practices like journaling or meditation foster inner peace and help manage holiday stress.
Tip: Set aside a few minutes daily for mindfulness practices, such as gratitude journaling, meditation, or deep breathing. Don’t know where to start? The Headspace app is available during the month of December to help support your mental health over the holiday season.
5. Nourish yourself with seasonal foods
Winter holidays often bring indulgent foods, and that’s okay! The key is to enjoy these foods mindfully. Choose seasonal favorites with intention, savoring each bite. Eating mindfully makes the experience more satisfying and promotes a balanced approach to health.
If you find holiday gatherings challenging, try filling your plate with a balance of nutritious options and the treats you truly love. You can also establish an evening ritual, like enjoying a seasonal tea, to help create a mindful pause in your day.
Tip: Practice mindful eating by savoring holiday treats and balancing them with nutrient-rich choices.
6. Strengthen connections with loved ones
The holidays can be an excellent time to deepen connections with family and friends. Quality time, whether in person or virtual, can boost your emotional well-being. Sharing experiences, playing games, or simply enjoying a meal together nurtures relationships and helps combat winter isolation.
Tip: If in-person gatherings aren’t possible, consider handwritten letters or video calls to maintain connections. These small gestures can make a big difference.
7. Give back to your community
During the holiday season, charitable organizations often need extra help, and volunteering can provide a fulfilling experience. There are several ways to help your community like serving meals at a soup kitchen or assembling hygiene bags for a homeless shelter. Community needs increase during this time, making your efforts even more appreciated.
Tip: Connect on the Cardinal at Work Cares Community Opportunities Platform where you can use your talents to tackle social and environmental issues and give back to your local community year-round.
No matter how you spend your time this holiday season, we hope these tips help you stay balanced and feel connected. Everyone at BeWell wishes you a joyful winter closure and a healthy, happy start to the new year.
