Listening with Empathy

Empathetic listening has the transformative power to alter the course of our personal and professional lives. In the words of Carl Rogers, when we are heard with empathy, it provides us the safety and freedom to express ourselves fully and to live and act in congruence with who we are.

In this online class, we will explore how empathetic listening can improve communication and relationships with families, friends, and professional teams, using the framework of Nonviolent Communication (NVC). You will learn how to listen in a way that captures the heart of someone’s experience with presence and care. You will also get to taste how it feels to express yourself and be heard for what you mean in the absence of judgments, criticisms, or advice. We will practice listening skills that can help you communicate with people in ways that are connecting and will also discuss how you can bring these skills into difficult conversations and open up pathways to turn potential conflicts around.

This class will be experiential and will involve listening exercises where you will gain skills to bring to your most important relationships. Please be prepared to actively participate to get the most of the class experience.

This class will not be recorded. Attendance at the live session is required to receive incentive points.
