You are invited to join us for a virtual book club to discuss thoughts raised by the book: Why Fish Don’t Exist: A Story of Loss, Love, and the Hidden Order of Life, by best-selling author and NPR podcast host Lulu Miller.

Miller’s book is a compelling read, with stories that encourage us to reflect and relate. This book brings to life the story of David Starr Jordan, Stanford University’s first president. On the surface, this is a story of science bringing order to chaos. Below that order, the author reveals the murky depths of regrettable pseudo-science – the “eugenics” that was a part of the University’s early days. Along the way, we are invited to relate to timeless reflections on how we cope with loss and how we look for meaning in life’s twists and turns.

Facilitators: Rosan Gomperts, LCSW, is the director of the Faculty Staff Help Center and has been licensed as a clinical social worker since 2002.  She works with individuals and couples as well as facilitating conflicts and giving courses and coaching in emotional intelligence and communicating with tact and skill.

Roland Hsu, LCSW, is a counselor at the Stanford Faculty Staff Help Center. He has worked and taught at Stanford over the past twenty years in a variety of positions.
