Wellness Grants
Current BeWell Champions are eligible to apply for a wellness grant of up to $1,000 to support a wellness activity within their workgroup or department.
Application periods:
- March 1-15
- Sept. 1-15
Application requirements
- Applications must be submitted by a BeWell Champion. Become a Champion today.
- Grant proposals must be supported by your supervisor. The proposed activity should also be supported by colleagues and department leadership.
- Review the sample application and grant FAQs before completing your application.
- If your proposal involves changes to facilities, obtain approval from your facilities manager before submitting your application. For risk management reasons, we will not fund proposals to bring exercise equipment into the workspace.
- Because of limited funding, most individuals benefiting from the proposed activity must be benefits-eligible university employees. (i.e., exempt, non-exempt, academic or bargaining unit staff and/or faculty). Postdocs, fellows, residents, and Stanford Health Care employees are not benefits-eligible university employees.
- Budgets must be comprehensively researched before your application submission. Goals and activities must align with your fund request; the funds must be necessary to support the proposed activity. Grant funds can not be used for participation incentives, celebrations, or donations. If finalization of your budget requires the assistance of other departments or partners, please consult with them and confirm the potential costs before submitting your application. Be as cost-effective in your proposal as possible; priority will be given to applications with a relatively low cost-per-person ratio (i.e., less than $50 per person, and even better, less than $35 per person).
- Consult with your workgroup’s finance representative to obtain the correct PTA for receiving grant funds if your application is selected. Also, confirm that the proposed expenses are eligible for reimbursement.
- Only complete applications submitted by the due date will be considered. Applications with missing, under-specified, or inaccurate information will not be considered.
All grant recipients will be asked to provide periodic progress reports at three and six months after receiving the funds. These reports should detail the status of their activities and how the funds have been utilized.
Wellness grant activity examples
- Compassion check-in rituals: A team decides to focus on compassion in the workplace. Collectively, they use the funds to bring a virtual compassion training to their workgroup through Healthy Living for Teams. They acquire new skills to implement compassion check-ins and use this ritual at the start of their meetings.
- Move more: A team has a shared goal to move more. They use the grant funds to register for a “virtual race,” in which they can log their steps/miles to complete a course of their choice. Team members will walk as a group and individually to track their progress.

Wellness Grant FAQs
Grant award decisions depend on the quality of applications, the total number of applications received, and the resources available. Grant submissions go through a review process and only some applications are selected. There is no set number of grants selected each year.
Grant award decisions depend on the quality of applications, the total number of applications received, whether or not the workgroup has received prior funding, and the resources available. We focus on awarding grant projects with buy-in from colleagues and support from department leadership, with a high probability of being sustained, regardless of future funding. Read more about wellness grant application requirements or check out the sample application to ensure your application meets the criteria.
Yes, we encourage teams to resubmit a proposal that was not previously selected. Before doing so, please consult the BeWell Champions team by submitting a ServiceNow ticket if you have any specific questions about why your application was not previously selected.
Yes. However, the grant program aims to increase the scope of grants awarded. As a result, preference will be given to teams that have not previously received a grant.
