The Stanford Health and Lifestyle Assessment (SHALA) is the gateway to all other BeWell Program segments. SHALA is an online health risk assessment that takes about 20 minutes to complete. SHALA helps participants identify healthy lifestyle behaviors as well as areas for possible improvement. Upon completion, participants immediately have access to an individualized health report and can take advantage of a variety of perks.

The 2019 SHALA deadline (Nov. 30, 2019) has now passed. Your next opportunity to take the SHALA starts on January 3, 2020.

Benefits-eligible employees who complete the SHALA can move on to the Wellness Profile, Berries and Engagement.


Do I need to start with the SHALA?

Yes. To participate in the BeWell program and be eligible for financial incentives and program perks (such as discounted classes and free sports tickets), you need to begin with the SHALA.

How often do I need to take the SHALA?

Active participants take the SHALA every year.

Can I take it more than once a year?

Yes. Participants are encouraged to take the SHALA as soon as they want to track changes in their behaviors.

Will I receive a financial incentive for completing SHALA?

There is no financial incentive for completing the SHALA. However, participants who complete their SHALA will receive discounted Stanford Health Improvement Program (HIP) fitness classes (two classes per quarter) and discounted Stanford Recreation & Wellness (Rec) Group Fitness Passes and discounts on select Recreational classes, as well as free tickets to select Stanford Athletics events. Please note: employees must take SHALA prior to registering for HIP or Rec classes to receive the discounted rates.

Must I take the SHALA prior to starting Wellness Profile, Engagement or Berries?

Yes. In order to be eligible for incentives, you must to complete the SHALA first.
